THE AMARILLO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2008
OCTOBER MEETING There will be no regular meeting in October. OCTOBER HAPPENINGS On Friday, October 3, 2008, 4 p.m., at the Ascension Academy, 9301 Ascension Parkway, Amarillo, volunteers are needed to set up the tables and chairs for the seminar on Saturday. If you or your sons or grandsons can help, please give an hour of your time to the society for this task. On Friday, October 3, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. come to the pre-seminar dinner at the Plaza Mexican Restaurant on 34th and Bell in Amarillo. There will be a “Dutch Treat” bar of fajitas and enchiladas. The cost will be $11.82 per person, which includes the meal, a soft drink and tip. Alcoholic beverages are extra. This is a chance to meet Patricia Hatcher, our program speaker, and Bob and Pat Gordon of Books and Things. Saturday, October 4, 2008, is The Amarillo Genealogical Society Fall Seminar at the Ascension Academy. Another happening in October is the 48th Annual Conference of the Texas State Genealogical Society, October 24th and 25th 2008, at the MCM ELEGANTÉ SUITES, 4250 Ridgemont Drive, Abilene, Texas. Go to the web site:http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txsgs/tsgs2008conference.pdf for complete details. “If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.” George Bernard Shaw LAST MEETING At our new meeting place, the Southwest branch of the Amarillo Public Library, we enjoyed a pot luck dinner and conversation with our fellow genealogists. A short business meeting finalized the plans for the October seminar.
MEMORIAL Lillian Mae Eckert Sloan died on September 6, 2008. She was born and grew up in Oklahoma City, where she was a teacher in the public schools. After moving to Amarillo, she devoted her life to serving the community through volunteering in numerous organizations. Lillian was a fine genealogist, and was always willing to help newcomers with their research problems. A long-time member of the Amarillo Genealogical Society, Lillian Sloan will be missed by all of us who knew her.
IN THE MONTHS TO COME November 3, 2008 - “Unusual Findings in Genealogical Travels,” by Bob and Sandi McGinnis. December 1, 2008 – Christmas Party at the Amarillo Club. Kathie Jackson, author of “So Great a Heritage,” will be the speaker and copies of her book will be available for purchase. January 5, 2009 – “How to Care for Photos and What to do with Old Photos,” by Cindy Eastland.
ANNOUNCEMENTS The Kishwaukee Genealogists in Rockford, Illinois, was disbanded, and we will no longer be receiving their newsletter at the Amarillo library. NEW SOURCE FOR RESEARCH Linda Bingham sent a News Release from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). They hold the following records: · Naturalization Certificate Files (C-files) from September 27, 1906 to April 1, 1956 · Alien Registration Forms from August 1, 1940 to March 31, 1944 · Visa files from July 1, 1924 to March 31, 1944 · Registry Files from March 2, 1929 to March 31, 1944 · Alien Files (A-files) numbered below 8 million (A8000000) and documents therein dated prior to May 1, 1951 In the past four years, they have received more than 40,000 requests for these records. To get this information to the public in a timelier manner, the USCIS has created a Genealogy Program. Bear in mind that you can only request information on deceased individuals. If you have ancestors who fall into the above categories, you can request one of these searches: · Index Search: Using biographical information provided by the researcher, USCIS searches its historical immigration and naturalization record indices for citations related to a specific immigrant. Search results (record citations) are returned to the researcher, along with instructions on how to request the file(s) from USCIS or the National Archives. Fee: $20.00. · Record Copy Request: Researchers with valid record citations (USCIS file numbers), gained through a USCIS Genealogy Program index search or through independent research, may request copies of historical immigration and naturalization records. Fee: $20.00/$35.00 (depending on the record type). Go to http://www.uscis.gov/genealogy to get copies of the forms and more information.
ANNOUNCEMENTS It’s still not too late to donate items to be given as door prizes at the October seminar and/or the December Christmas Party. Give anything that you would like to receive as a door prize for yourself: books, pretty things, reams of paper or other types of supplies to use in genealogy.
